Internet Safety

***I did the necessary things that were listed on our assignments.
1. Developing a House of Learning- technology and a house of learning

2. The videos that I watched gave me an uneasy feeling. I did not know there were so many desperate and dumb kids that can't find that love they need so they go searching for it on the internet. It makes me wish that schools better educated students from a young age, to be safe on the internet because I could not believe some of these stories. The video tracking Teresa was the scariest. In just 20 minutes, the guy was able to find out everything he needed about this girl and how he could see her. (Address, phone, parent's names, school, etc..) It made me sick.

3. My biggest take- aways from this lesson are that children are not as educated on the matter of internet safety as they should be. These predators knew exactly what to say to lure these children right into their arms, and the majority of the stories were about girls. Obviously, young girls are not receiving that love/attention they crave for, so they are vulnerable to creepy old men that will take advantage of these girls. Schools should have programs for kids, geered towards girls, that will give these girls the confidence and brains they need to stay away from these wackos.

4.
*What did they already know?
They knew it was a problem and that it happens all the time. They arn't thinking and they give away their personal information thinking they are invincible.
*They pretty much knew everything I already had to say:
-most victims are young females, with overage male predators
-Happens quite frequently
-Many don't make it out alive, but there are sometime the lucky ones who are able to get away
-The victims are vulnerable and want that attention they crave and arn't receiving.
*I was surprised by his reaction, because he made it sound like that's just what happens everyday, it's gonna keep on happening and probably get worse. Depressing.
*I think my dad will think about what I have shared with him, and probably worry for us, his kids, alittle more. He has taught us well though, and he knows that.

week 11

I had some difficulties with my computer for this, so that's why it took a while. The format is a little messed up, but all of the necessary information is present. http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AQl4vz8NWprBZHFjcjQ1N18xODljbTJiY2Y&hl=en

Week 10

I learned a lot from the three different videos I watched about technology in the classroom. The three videos were titled Habitats,Brown bear brown bear, and I love spiders. In each of this videos, it showed the children using technology to learn about these different subjects. You could really see their excitement as their learning was hands on and interactive. In the spider video, children used cameras to take pictures of the different spiders they saw outside of the classroom. They enjoyed hunting for the spiders and also being able to take their picture. Later, the teacher explained how kids from Missouri were going to send them pictures of the spiders they found in nature, and how this class would do the same. It was a fun way to learn about the different spiders across the country, and they used technology to do this. In the Brown Bear and Habitats project, the children worked in groups on the computer drawing and creating images through the different tools on the computer. The teacher mentioned how the children felt a sense of accomplishment when they were able to see the work they did on the computer, and when it was made into a book. The technology used in these classrooms was fun and educational for these students and I think it is a very important part in a young child's life.

Week 9

I completed the necessary assignments for this week and below are the questions answered from a teacher.

1. The technologies that are available in the class are digital cameras, a computer with speakers available with i tunes, and a VCR player.
2. Technologies that are wanted in the class are a TV with DVD player and the necessary components for a power point presentation.
3. Technology is used throughout each day in this class. There are computer games available for the children to play during free time. Also, songs from i tunes are played to teach the class new songs and keep them engaged. They love it!
4. She thinks it is important to provide technology in the class because it helps prepare them for this technology based world. By using technology you are able to teach methods in a more interesting and grabbing way. It's good for the teacher as well as the children.

After talking with this teacher, I was able to gain insight on her view of the technology in her classroom. Though there are few technology based resources, the teacher is hopeful for the future technologies she might receive. It's great to have the computer because the kids have fun with the different games. Also, the teacher says they get so excited when she plays songs for them to learn! She thinks that if there were power point resources in the class, she could teach them in a way that would excite the children. For example, if the children were learning about a bear she could show footage of a real bear and it in it's natural habitat. It would be very effective.

I think that technology is important to implement in the class because it is a more effective way of teaching and the children are going to need to experience technology because it will become a huge part of their life. Technology has come a long way and is continuing to consume our world, so it's important to give children a taste of it at a young age. Also, the children are able to go outside the four walls of the room when learning because technology opens up a world of learning. I can only hope that I will have good resources in my future class, so that I can give my students the highest level of learning.
